What is Hysteresis Alloy?
Hysteresis in materials is a fascinating phenomenon that has significant implications in various fields, including engineering, physics, and materials science. It refers to the lagging of an effect behind its cause, resulting in a time-dependent behavior of a material. Understanding hysteresis is crucial when working with shape memory alloys (SMAs), as it plays a fundamental role in their unique properties and applications.
One of the most commonly encountered examples of hysteresis is observed in the stress-strain relationship of a material. When a force is applied to a material, it deforms, and upon removing the force, it returns to its original shape. However, the stress-strain curve during loading and unloading is not the same, forming a loop-like shape. This difference arises due to the internal energy dissipation within the material during deformation, resulting in energy losses and irreversible changes.
The Function of Element Cobalt
Cobalt, like iron, can be magnetised and so is used to make magnets. It is alloyed with aluminium and nickel to make particularly powerful magnets.
Other alloys of cobalt are used in jet turbines and gas turbine generators, where high-temperature strength is important.
Cobalt metal is sometimes used in electroplating because of its attractive appearance, hardness and resistance to corrosion.
Cobalt salts have been used for centuries to produce brilliant blue colours in paint, porcelain, glass, pottery and enamels.
Radioactive cobalt-60 is used to treat cancer and, in some countries, irradiate food to preserve it.
